Sumitomo
Rubber Industries said on Wednesday (3/11) it would acquire exclusive rights to use the Dunlop brand for tires and accessories in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam from Malaysia’s Continental Tire group.
The value of this acquisition has not been disclosed, but is estimated at almost 1 billion yen or around IDR 107 billion (exchange rate IDR 107.13).The acquisition will begin in January 2026.

“This marks Dunlop’s return to the peak of global popularity,” said Sumitomo Rubber President Satoru Yamamoto, reported

Sumitomo Rubber is expanding its sales territory with a combined brand.Last May they bought the rights to use the Dunlop brand in North America, Europe and Oceania from Goodyear Tire & Rubber which is based in the United States.
While Sumitomo Rubber will not change its name, it will begin using Dunlop for joint brand communications next year.The Dunlop name will be included in the company name of dealers in several regions.
After the acquisition, India will be the only region where Sumitomo Rubber cannot use the Dunlop brand for four-wheeler tires, as the rights there are owned by the Ruia Group.
The Dunlop tire brand, created by John Boyd Dunlop in Ireland in 1888, is held by several companies in various parts of the world.
Before being acquired, the Dunlop brand in North America and Europe was controlled by Goodyear.Meanwhile in Malaysia and Singapore it is held by Continental and in India by the Ruia Group.
Dunlop in Indonesia, Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam and South Africa and Latin America except Mexico are already owned by Sumitomo Rubber.
