Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (
Periklindo
) does not dismiss an electric car from China has not been able to boost vehicle sales in Indonesia.
Nevertheless, the association remains optimistic that the sales target of 900 thousand units in 2025 which is set by Gaikindo might be achieved with the help of electric cars.
Chairperson of Periklindo Moeldoko stressed that the sale of electric cars is still growing positively and contributes to the big target of Gaikindo this year.

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Research & Development Periklindo, Prabowo Kartoleksono rate, the trend of selling electric vehicles actually grows significantly compared to the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE).
“If we see it that the sales trend is actually the Ice that falls. We rose almost 500 percent compared to last year,” Prabowo said.
He mentioned that the latest data shows the total sales of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) as of July 2025 has reached 42,178 units, or up more than 200 percent compared to the previous period.
“This is the data in July 2025 BIV’s total sales reached 42,178 units. It almost matched the number throughout 2024,” he explained.
Reflecting on that number, Periklindo is optimistic that the specific target of 60 thousand units of electric cars can be achieved.
According to them, this EV achievement is expected to support the target of 900 thousand units of four -wheeled vehicles that are feared by Gaikindo missed because ICE sales are slowing down.
“If EV is sure we can be achieved (the target), because the trend has led to there. So just the conclusion, which one is down,” he concluded.
EV Infrastructure is Inadequate
The debate of who was first developed, the demand for electric vehicles or the provision of the Filling Infrastructure (SPKLU), according to the Chairperson of Periklindo Moeldoko, the answer was in the government through PLN.
“This is always this theory, which I always say between chicken and eggs. The ones who want to invest, eh, first. There aren’t many people who use it, then I will take a loss. Back later how many decades.
Moeldoko stressed that PLN has a strategic role as a provider so that the growth of EV and SPKLU can go hand in hand.
PLN according to Moeldoko must be an initiator in building an electric car infrastructure ecosystem in Indonesia.
“I think that the medium was originally PLN. PLN became an intermediary on how to balance the EV growth and also the growth of SPKLU. This is if there is no PLN it won’t grow,” he said.
“Well, so now it has begun to grow rapidly, the private sector will welcome it,” continued Moeldoko later.
He continued that at this time the tendency that arose was precisely the EV sales trend that became a catalyst for the acceleration of investment in SPKLU, not the provision of SPKLU infrastructure through PLN.
“But seeing the current trend where the development (electric car sales) is extraordinary, so this triggers investors to hurry to immediately build SPKLU,” he said.
To welcome the interest of the investor, Moeldoko said that Periklindo is also actively coordinating with PLN so that the supply of electricity for SPKLU does not become an obstacle.
“Next we also often communicate with PLN so that investment in the sector is given ease for the flow, the current, electric power and not expensive,” he said.
The former Presidential Chief of Staff gave an example of electricity needs for EV in remote areas, such as mines and plantations, really needed help from PLN.
“For example, now, what if there is a remote area that really needs EV in the mining area in general or in plantations but there is no electricity, the electricity.” This is still we have to connect with PLN, communicate with PLN.Even though it’s using a solar panel, but there must be PLN interference, “he said.
