After going through a waiver, Anduha can remain as a minor leaguer in Triple-A under the club or obtain free agent status.

Anduha played 149 games for the New York Yankees in 2018 with a batting average of 0.297, an on-base percentage of 0.328, a slugging percentage of 0.527, 27 homers and 92 RBIs. He came second behind Shohei Ohtani (Angels) in the Rookie of the Year voting. At the time, there was a controversy over who should be selected as Rookie of the Year between him and Ohtani.

If Ohtani later grew into a star representing the league, Anduha took the opposite path. Quantitatively and qualitatively, he never showed what he was then.

In September of last year, he transferred to Pittsburgh through a waiver claim and recorded a batting average of 0.209, on-base percentage of 0.247, and slugging percentage of 0.388 in 22 games over two seasons. This season, too, his role was limited to platooning against lefties, going 5-for-33 in 13 games.

Manager Derek Shelton said leaving him out was “a tough decision” and explained that “a schedule of facing right-handed starters for a while” had an impact. Acknowledging that giving opportunities to participate is not easy.

Left-hander Rob Jastrizni has returned from the injured list. After giving up five runs in 5 2/3 innings in seven games this season, he was placed on the disabled list with an elbow injury.

In a meeting with reporters before the game, he said, “At first, I was anxious at the thought that I could rest for over a year due to a serious injury like Tommy John, so I didn’t do anything, but I was relieved when I heard that it was a nerve problem. The team is having a hard time, but it was so hard to sit alone,” he said about his return.

With Jastrizny’s return, Pittsburgh has two left-handed bullpens.

“I knew it was possible to come back during this season,” Shelton said. In the meantime, I took more bench members because I had a lot of rest, but now I can have two left-handed bullpens again.”
