Sales
electric car
in Indonesia is increasingly massive, but the majority of buyers are still dominated by
early adopters
(early adopters) and some
early majority
(early followers). On average, they are not first car buyers but come from the upper middle class.
These findings come from research by ID COMM, a PR firm based on SDGs issues, through interviews with consumers, industry players and the media as well as analysis of policies and regulations for electric cars that have been launched.
“This transition shows more of a shift in behavior than the expansion of new markets. This information is important for various parties related to the automotive sector to know,” according to Asti Putri, Co-Founder and Director of ID COMM, and leader of this research, Thursday (11/12).

Meanwhile, purchasing electric cars based on environmental aspects is still additional.
Then the decision-making process for purchasing an electric car is actually not much different from consumers of fossil fuel cars.
Usually they are influenced by the people around them.Apart from that, social media and
influencers
Automotive is their initial reference for looking for information, from product reviews to brand comparisons.
Other findings show that all electric car owners in this research already owned conventional cars. This means that an electric car is not the first car to be purchased with a price range of between IDR 189 million and IDR 1.58 billion.
This also shows that the electric car user segment is dominated by the upper middle class.
Age of electric car buyers
Meanwhile, in terms of age, there are three main groups, namely 25-35 year olds who are building their careers, 36-50 year olds who are already established in terms of family and work, and 50 year olds and over or those who want to maintain comfortable mobility without high operational costs.
Apart from that, they are also influenced by economic aspects because operational costs are much more economical, especially for consumers with high mobility.Tax incentives also strengthen interest because the annual tax on electric cars is much lower, around IDR 150 thousand.
Electric car sales 2025
The electric car market is getting fatter every year, this can be seen from data revealed by the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) in 2025.
Sales of battery-based electric cars reached 69,146 units as of October, while for the full year 2024 period they stopped at 43,188 units.
Sales jumped rapidly in October 2025, as electric car sales reached 13,867 units, a significant increase from September’s 4,097 units.
Still in the same data, a positive trend is experienced by the plug in hybrid car (PHEV) segment because sales up to October increased many times from 2025. During last year, sales of PHEV cars in Indonesia were only 136 units, while in January-October 2025 they reached 3,798 units.
Different from the two electrification segments, hybrid car sales until October 2025 were recorded as not being able to exceed market gains during 2024.
Sales of hybrid cars in 2024 will amount to 59,903 units, while from January to October they will reach 51,566 units and will most likely continue to grow until the end of 2025.
Claudius Surya, Research Associate ID COMM added that getting to the early majority phase requires cross-sector synchronization, namely policy consistency, clear industrial business direction and public education that emphasizes practical benefits.
Consumer trust also depends on SPKLU quality, after-sales service and spare parts availability.
