Pindad President Director Sigit P. Santosa, said that the target would start in 2028 with 100 thousand units as the initial phase of production.
“The same message from all commissions to Pindad is don’t be euphoric about losing. National car development cannot just be a program, we have to pilot technological innovation and build an ecosystem,” said Sigit in a written statement, quoted on Wednesday (10/12).

He also emphasized that the national car project should not stop at slogans.
In carrying out this project, Pindad collaborates with the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas together with the Industrial Area Association (HKI).
The three of them have also made a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which is also aimed at strengthening planning for priority industrial areas in the National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029.
Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy emphasized that Indonesia is entering a new phase in realizing the independence of the automotive industry and highlighted the importance of industrial areas, supply chains, integrated technology development, and forming a national industry with high competitiveness.
“This is a new history to continue a milestone that has not yet been completed. Making cars is possible, building a car factory is possible, but creating a national car industry is not necessarily possible. Without a region, developing a good national car industry must also build a supply chain ecosystem, and this needs to be in industrial areas,” said Rachmat.
Rachmat added that this is the first step to develop environmentally friendly industrial areas, domestic automotive supply chains, and advanced manufacturing technology.
“This collaboration is expected to open up opportunities for Indonesia to achieve independence in the automotive industry so that it becomes a world-class industry,” said Rachmat.
