“Our hope is no longer towards ICE (conventional vehicles), more towards EVs. Because the world trend is heading that way,” said Moeldoko when met at his office, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (10/12).
According to him, national car production based on internal combustion engines (ICE) is actually a step backwards. Not to mention, it is felt that it is impossible for Indonesia to compete with large manufacturers who have already mastered conventional or ICE vehicle technology.

“Let’s not build an ICE one. We can’t catch up,” he said.
He emphasized that the momentum of electrification provides a great opportunity for Indonesia to build industrial capabilities from the start and strengthen its bargaining position in front of world automotive manufacturers.
“But if we have a national brand from the start, we will have bargaining power with large manufacturers,” said Moeldoko.
Apart from that, he supports the government’s plan, because for him Indonesia cannot lose momentum in the current transition period from conventional to electric vehicles.
“I’ve said from the start that we must have a national brand. Don’t let there be a change from conventional to electric cars, it’s the same. Previously it was country A, now it’s country B, what’s the difference,” he said.
The development of an Indonesian national car seems to be a serious project because it is a direct mandate from President Prabowo Subianto.Even national cars have been included in the National Strategic Project (PSN).
As a follow-up and acceleration of national cars, the government has now partnered with Pindad.
This state-owned company will soon build a factory to produce national cars in Subang, West Java, with a production capacity target of up to 500 thousand units of cars per year.
This target is quite ambitious. It can even compete with the production volume of the largest Japanese car factory in the country, namely Daihatsu with 530 thousand units per year.
Pindad President Director Sigit P. Santosa, said that the target would start in 2028 with 100 thousand units as the initial phase of production.
“The same message from all commissions to Pindad is don’t be euphoric about losing. National car development cannot just be a program, we have to pilot technological innovation and build an ecosystem,” said Sigit in a written statement, quoted on Wednesday (10/12).
