Car sales
only in Malaysia is currently above Indonesia, the country which is always known to be the largest in ASEAN.This dominance has made the neighboring country successful in occupying the top position as the country with the largest domestic car sales in Southeast Asia.
The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) noted that car sales in Malaysia in January-October 2025 reached 655,328 units, slightly better than Indonesia which stopped at 635,844 units.

If reviewed on a monthly basis, car sales in Malaysia during October increased 7 percent to 75,992 units, while in October 2024 it was only 71,022 units.According to the association, one of the reasons for this spike is the increasing demand for battery-based electric cars.
On the other hand, Malaysia’s economy grew 5.2 percent on an annual basis in the third quarter of 2025, up from 4.4 percent in the second quarter.

If we look deeper, sales of battery-based electric vehicles (BEV) almost tripled to 4,345 units in October, up 80 percent to 31,273 units.
All of this is driven by Chinese brands with the majority being BYD and Denza, reported Just Auto, Wednesday (26/11).
Reputation suffers
This result hit Indonesia hard, considering that Malaysia has a much smaller population than Indonesia.Currently Indonesia has a population of 280 million people, while Malaysia only has 39 million people.
Bob Azam, Vice President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), stated that the Indonesian automotive market must be able to reach at least 800 thousand units this year in order to remain optimistic about being above Malaysia.
Because, if total car sales fall below this figure, Indonesia’s reputation as the largest market in ASEAN will be disrupted.
“Yes, we hope to get 800 thousand units, so that we are above Malaysia, if it is less than 800 thousand units it is dangerous. So image is important,” said Bob last weekend at Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2025, ICE BSD Tangerang recently.
If this happens or national car sales lose to Malaysia, it is feared that the country’s automotive ecosystem or investment could potentially go away.
“If number 1 in Southeast Asia is no longer in Indonesia, then the ecosystem will worry about moving. So it is very important that we maintain our reputation as number 1 in Asean,” said Bob.
