Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (
Gaikindo
) revise new targets
car sales
in 2025 it will be only 780 thousand units.Previously, Gaikindo targeted 900 thousand car units to be sold this year.
This projection has dropped significantly, considering that the economic conditions and purchasing power of the Indonesian people are currently weakening. This figure is much smaller than wholesales for January-December 2024 which reached 865,723 units, while retail was 889,680 units.
“Yes, the projection is 780 thousand units,” said Chairman I Gaikindo Jongkie D Sugiarto via short message, Monday (1/12).

With these figures, it means that dozens of Gaikindo member car brands are required to sell at least 264,156 units during November-December, or 132,078 per month, in order to achieve the old target.
Manufacturer concerns
On the other hand, national car sales raise concerns for manufacturers, one of which is market leader Toyota.
Bob Azam, Vice President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), stated that the Indonesian automotive market must be able to reach at least 800 thousand units this year to remain above Malaysia. If total car sales fall below this figure, Indonesia’s reputation as the largest market in ASEAN will be affected.
“Yes, we hope to get 800 thousand units, so that we are above Malaysia, if it is less than 800 thousand units it is dangerous. So image is important,” said Bob last weekend at Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2025, ICE BSD Tangerang.
If national car sales lose to Malaysia this year, Bob is worried that the country’s automotive ecosystem or investment could potentially go away.
“If number 1 in Southeast Asia is no longer in Indonesia, then the ecosystem will worry about moving. So it is very important that we maintain our reputation as number 1 in Asean,” said Bob.
