So far, the Chinese government only allows L2 or L2+ autonomous vehicles to be driven on public roads. This level requires the driver to always keep his hands on the steering wheel.
L3 autonomous technology enables driving without the need for human hands on the steering wheel, in conditions such as highways and busy urban roads. However, the driver still has to watch and be alert and can completely take over driving if necessary.

This approval was issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) with the aim of helping L3’s autonomous technology transition from its current testing phase to pilot road use on designated roads, in Chongqing and Beijing, before wider public use.
MIIT confirmed the two models approved for production were developed by two state-owned car manufacturers, Changan Automobile’s Deepal SL03 and BAIC Arcfox’s Alpha S.
The models are said to be capable of being driven autonomously on busy urban roads at a maximum speed of up to 50 km per hour and on motorways up to 80 km per hour.
