Indonesia finally explained why their team visited the Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) factory which produces other Chinese brand cars some time ago. There were suspicions that the Chinese brand would collaborate with HIM to achieve its car production target in Indonesia, because the factory itself had not been completed.
Luther Panjaitan, Head of Public and Government Relations at BYD Motor Indonesia, explained that his party and the principal had indeed visited the Handal factory. However, it was said that this was only a visit, without any intention of wanting to collaborate regarding the assembly.

“So our manufacturing team from headquarter before carrying out operation kick off in Indonesia, they need to research several things. As I can describe, it is indeed a production process in Indonesia,” said Luther when met in the PIK area, Monday (24/11).
“Then QC level. Then there are many other things that are R&D. So at that time one of the things that became a reference was that we also happened to be good friends with the owner of the facility. We conducted surveys and research at the facility,” he added.

According to Luther, the visit could be the company’s initial capital before starting production in its own factory.
“Well, this is once again to maintain consistency and quality when our production facilities are running. That’s actually the reason,” said Luther.
Furthermore, he added that his party does not plan to use the Handal factory for BYD factory production needs.
As is known, Handal is a manufacturing company that accepts assembly of various automotive brands for the Indonesian market. On the other hand, BYD claims to have built a factory worth IDR 11.2 trillion in Subang, West Java which is reportedly ready to operate in the first quarter of next year.
“We are optimizing the facilities we have,” he said.
In September 2025, Handal admitted that he had been approached by BYD, the leader of the Indonesian electric car market. This approach is thought to be related to production efforts, but both parties have not outlined the details.
Jongkie D Sugiarto, Deputy Main Commissioner of HIM, confirmed that BYD representatives had come to his office for ‘a conversation’.
“He (BYD) has come to us, yes,” said Jongkie when met in Jakarta, Monday (29/9).
Although he did not reveal when the meeting took place, Jongkie said the incident was not an exploration of vehicle assembly cooperation. He said that his party and BYD had a chance to chat while being shown HIM’s production facilities.
“Have a casual chat, he (BYD) wants to see, that’s fine,” he said.
Handal currently produces many Chinese car brands, namely Chery, Neta, Geely, BAIC, Jetour, Jaecoo, Aletra, Polytron, and Xpeng.
